Jara Drainage Channel: the channel that keeps water from returning to the pool
Without a perimeter channel, everything the pool surround carries — sand, leaves, sunscreen, hose-down water — ends up in the pool and in the filter. Build the channel with a minimum longitudinal slope of 0.5-1% toward the collection point; a level channel becomes a pool of standing water.
Check that the channel's cross-section leaves the drain clear under the piece and that the outlet to the drainage network has been tested before covering anything.
Raise the edge of the surround paving 5-10 mm above the channel so water enters by gravity instead of jumping over it.
Bed the pieces onto the channel's flanges, checking they sit without rocking and without pressing against the channel wall.
Leave 3-5 mm joints between pieces so water can also enter through them and to absorb expansion.
Seal the joint between the channel and the paving with polyurethane, leaving an expansion joint every 4-5 m.

💡 Professional tip: what ruins a perimeter channel isn't the piece, it's the slope. A channel built level — because "it drains anyway" — holds water, breeds mosquitoes and starts smelling within two weeks; always give it 0.5-1% toward the drain and test the outlet with a hose before covering it. Second mistake: setting the paving flush with the channel. If the surround ends up at the same level, water passes over the top and keeps heading for the pool; leave the paving 5-10 mm above the channel's lip. And don't bond the pieces: they should rest freely so they can be lifted to clean the channel at every season opening, which is when the sand accumulated over the whole winter shows up.
