🧰 Installation
Wait until the pillar cap has set before crowning it; on fresh mortar the finial shifts out of place.
Clean the dust off the top face of the pillar cap.
Mark the centre of the two diagonals as a setting-out reference.
Spread bonding mortar over the whole bearing footprint, not just the perimeter.
Set the finial centred and check plumb from two sides at once.
Point the joint and clean off any residue before it sets.

💡 Professional tip: centre the finial by eye from ground level, not by tape-measuring on the pillar cap. What's seen from the street is the axis of the whole pillar, and if the cap ended up a centimetre off-centre, centring the finial on it just doubles the error. Step back a few metres, look at the whole thing, and correct it before the mortar grabs.
