Bonsáis volcanic substrate (Akadama substitute) Fine volcanic gravel : The best substrate for bonsai and cacti. Available in 2 grain sizes : 1-2 mm and 2-4 mm . With a stabilized pH between 5.5 and 6 , it is an excellent growing medium.
Akadama substitute and nutrient booster : We have always heard that Akadama is the best substrate for bonsai. This Japanese volcanic substrate has been used since the early days of bonsai cultivation, but its mineral content is much lower than that of volcanic lava gravel. Both are of volcanic origin , lightweight and porous, and retain moisture, making them perfect for bonsai and cacti.
However, volcanic gravel has the advantage of providing more minerals: 27% more silicon , 12% more calcium , 10% more magnesium , and 3% more iron . Volcanic gravel outperforms Akadama.
It slowly breaks down with irrigation water, releasing essential minerals and micronutrients such as calcium , magnesium , iron , and silicon . This means your bonsai will be better and more completely nourished than if you used Akadama.
In addition, its red/brown/garnet color enhances the beauty of your bonsai, adding a unique aesthetic touch.
