Set out the whole staircase and check that all treads come out equal.
Clean the substrate and dampen it slightly before applying the mortar.
Spread bonding mortar with a notched trowel.
Bed the step from top to bottom, taking care not to knock the visible edge.
Give a minimum 1% reverse slope towards the outside.
Grout and remove the excess while it's still fresh.

💡 Professional tip: on a smooth piece, the visible edge is everything, and it's the first thing to chip. Never use it as a lever point when positioning the piece, and protect the edge with a wooden batten while you work around it: a knock from a wheelbarrow on the edge of a smooth step can't be disguised afterwards.
