Shut off the main valve before starting and bleed the line.
Clean the supply thread and check no old material remains.
Wrap PTFE tape in the tightening direction, three to five turns.
Screw the tap on by hand and finish tightening with a wrench, without forcing it.
Open the main valve slowly and check there is no seepage at the thread.

💡 Professional tip: don't crank the tap fully home with a wrench trying to get it to point straight down. If you go past the right position, the correct fix isn't to keep tightening: back it off, add one or two more turns of PTFE tape, and rethread it. Forcing the final tightening is what cracks the fountain's fitting, and that crack won't show until the damp patch appears.
