Cast the strip footing and check it's perfectly level before laying the first course.
Dry-lay the first three or four pieces to decide the position of the carved pattern and avoid it repeating vertically.
Bed with masonry mortar, keeping the joint width consistent and cleaning off excess before it sets.
Build up with staggered joints, checking plumb and level every two courses.
Mix pieces from several pallets to spread out any slight tone variation between batches.
Cap the wall with a coping or pillar cap that has a drip edge overhanging the panel.

💡 Professional tip: with carved-texture pieces, the most common mistake is washing off the mortar with plenty of water once it has already started to set: the water carries the cement wash into the bottom of the relief and leaves a whitish haze that's impossible to remove afterwards. Remove the excess with the trowel while fresh and finish with a dry, stiff-bristle brush.
