It's offered in three heights so the pillar's cap lines up with the baluster's in each series, without the fence ending up stepped. It also works as a freestanding decorative pilaster in classic-style settings.

Set out the pillar positions first, then split the balusters between them, never the other way round.
Check that the base is level and clean; the pillar is the plumb reference for the whole run.
Assemble the pillar sections on bonding mortar, checking plumb in both directions at each height.
If you need to lower the height, cut at the internal marks before bedding the piece.
Let the pillar set before starting the row of balusters against it.
Fit the pillar cap that matches its position in the fence.
