Cordless Chainsaws, Hedge Trimmers and Pruners: How to Choose

Cordless chainsaw, hedge trimmer or pruner: what to choose

Pruning on battery power gets rid of cables and fuel mixes. The Bellota BePower range has three families of pruning and cutting tools: chainsaws, hedge trimmers with edge trimming, and electric pruners (with pole extensions and a tying tool to complete the set). Choosing well comes down to two questions: how thick are the branches or how tall is the hedge you will be cutting, and which battery does each tool use.

Cordless chainsaws: from the garden to professional pruning

  • The Bellota BePower EG2100S Smart chainsaw is the hobbyist model: 14.4 V, 1.5 Ah battery (around 90 minutes depending on use), 220 W motor, branches up to 100 mm and 1,330 g with battery. It is not intended for professional use.
  • The ECS2100P steps up to a 500 W brushless motor with a 14.4 V, 2.5 Ah battery, cuts up to 100 mm, weighs 1.33 kg with battery and shares its battery with the EPR132P and EPR233P pruners.
  • The ECS2110P runs at 21.6 V with a 500 W brushless motor, cuts up to 110 mm, chain speed of 10 m/s and 1,600 g with battery.
  • The ECS1100P (470 W, 110 mm cut, 1.8 kg with battery) comes with three 4.2 Ah batteries and a three-terminal charger, designed for long working days.
  • The ECSP1210P pole chainsaw (21.6 V, 5 Ah, 550 W) reaches high branches with an extendable pole from 1,767 to 2,580 mm and cuts up to 210 mm; it weighs 3.75 kg with battery.

The professional models have automatic chain lubrication, a charge display and safety buttons. If you prefer petrol for pruning, the MS1P2500E (25 cc, 0.9 kW, 250 mm bar, 3.3 kg) is used with one hand, and the MS2P2500E (300 mm bar, 3.8 kg) has a double handle and is recommended for old olive trees.

Hedge trimmers and edge trimmers

The EG12S Smart hedge trimmer and edge trimmer is a 2-in-1: you swap the blades and go from shaping hedges and shrubs to trimming lawn edges. According to its data sheet, it cuts up to 220 mm as a hedge trimmer and 130 mm wide as an edge trimmer, weighs no more than 950 g with the hedge trimmer blades, and its battery gives about 90 minutes of work. It comes in a rigid case.

If you want a pruner, chainsaw and hedge trimmer on the same 14.4 V battery, there is the Smart EGKIT1S 3-tool kit.

Electric pruners: cutting capacity

Here the branch diameter rules. From smallest to largest:

  • The Smart EG132S pruner cuts up to 32 mm with dual opening (25 or 32 mm), a 220 W motor and 950 g with battery. It has an anti-cut system and is designed for hobby gardeners.
  • The POWER CUT EPR233PM cuts up to 33 mm with a 500 W brushless motor and a 14.4 V battery, also 950 g with battery. It is sold without a battery or with 2 or 3 batteries of 2.5 Ah, and there is a vineyard version, the EPR233PM2BV.
  • The POWER CUT EPR238PM reaches 38 mm with an 800 W brushless motor and a 21.6 V battery; it weighs 890 g without battery and 1,235 g with it.
  • The EPRP140P pole pruner is 1.6 m long, has a 720 W motor and cuts up to 40 mm at height. It is sold without a battery and accepts 2.5, 4.2 or 5 Ah batteries.

For branches that no longer fit in pruning shears, see our guide to pruning saws and pole saws, and if you are unsure between manual and electric shears, the one on pruning shears. To tie up vines, the ETY125P electric tying tool ties branches and vine shoots up to 25 mm with a 14.4 V battery.

Battery: voltage, capacity and compatibility

Amp-hours (Ah) tell you how long a charge lasts, and voltage sets the tool family. The Smart tools share a 14.4 V, 1.5 Ah battery (EGBAT21S), the EPR238PM and EPR137P use the 21.6 V, 2.5 Ah ECBAEPR137P battery, the ECS1100P has its own 21.6 V battery, and the EPRP140P accepts the 5 Ah ECBA5AHP battery. Do not assume one battery fits everything: always check the “compatible with” line on the data sheet. The whole catalogue is in the batteries, chargers and machinery spare parts collection.

Basic maintenance

Check the chain oil tank before each session and grease the pruner with GRS6664 lithium grease. For storing batteries, the ECBAEPR137P data sheet recommends a dry place and charging at least every three months. And if you also need petrol machines, here is our guide to brush cutters, leaf blowers and tillers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a hobby and a professional cordless chainsaw?

The hobby model, like the EG2100S, has a 220 W brushed motor and is not intended for professional use. The professional models (ECS2100P, ECS2110P, ECS1100P) have a brushless motor of 470 to 500 W and cut up to 100 or 110 mm.

How thick a branch can an electric pruner cut?

It depends on the model: the EGP120S reaches 20 mm, the EG132S 32 mm, the EPR233PM 33 mm, the EPR238PM 38 mm and the EPRP140P pole pruner 40 mm. Always choose a capacity above the usual thickness of your branches.

Can the same battery be used on several Bellota tools?

Only within the same family. The Smart tools (EG132S, EG12S, EGKIT1S) share the 14.4 V EGBAT21S battery, and the ECS2100P chainsaw shares its battery with the EPR132P and EPR233P pruners. Always check compatibility on the data sheet.

How can I prune at height without a ladder?

With a pole tool: the ECSP1210P chainsaw reaches a 2,580 mm pole length and cuts up to 210 mm, and the EPRP140P pole pruner is 1.6 m long and cuts up to 40 mm.

Which pruning chainsaw should I choose for olive trees?

For old olive trees, the petrol MS2P2500E (two-handed, 300 mm bar) is the one recommended on its data sheet, and among the battery models, the ECSP1210P pole chainsaw is designed for fruit trees, olive trees and ornamentals.
