How to easily and effectively remove moss from the lawn

How to remove moss from the lawn easily and effectively

From autumn to early spring, the problem of moss in the garden becomes especially relevant. The damp, cold climate of these months favors its growth, making it the main enemy of a healthy lawn.

Under the generic name “moss”, numerous plant genera and species are grouped. Unlike plants that reproduce by seeds, mosses produce spores that travel with the wind and quickly germinate in humid conditions, forming structures that eventually suffocate the grasses in your garden.

Factors that promote the appearance of moss

To combat moss at Vetonek, we always recommend first understanding why it appears. The most common factors are:

  • Shade: Especially that caused by trees and hedges, which also compete for nutrients through their roots.

  • Waterlogging: Poorly drained soil is paradise for moss.

  • Excess thatch (Thatch): The accumulation of dead plant matter at the base of the lawn prevents the soil from "breathing".

  • Acidic pH: Soils with an acidic tendency or excessive use of peat without control favor its appearance.

  • Very low mowing: By cutting too short (golf green style), we weaken the plant and leave open space for moss to colonize.

  • Insufficient fertilization: A hungry lawn is a weak lawn. Therefore, it is vital to have a professional fertilization plan.

Vetonek recommendation: Use our Mineravi lawn fertilizer, a specific organic-mineral fertilizer that strengthens the plant from the roots.

Cultural practices to prevent invasion

Before treating it, we can make things difficult for moss with these three actions:

  1. Drainage: Avoid waterlogging through land drainage or gravel beds if the soil is very clayey.

  2. Scarifying and aerating: Carrying out these tasks regularly helps remove thatch and rejuvenate the lawn.

  3. Rational fertilization: A well-nourished lawn competes much more effectively against the spread of moss.

Effective treatment: Anti Moss and Greening

When moss has already taken hold, decisive action is necessary. At Vetonek we have the definitive solution: the Anti Moss and natural lawn greening.

This product acts quickly, necrosing (burning) the moss in a very short time. In addition, thanks to its contribution of iron and sulfur, it provides immediate vigor and an intense green color to the remaining grass.

How to apply it correctly:

  • Dosage: 30 g/m².

  • Application: By evenly sprinkling over the affected areas.

  • Watering: It is essential to water after application to activate the product.

  • Maintenance: If necessary, the treatment can be repeated after 30-40 days.

What to do after treatment?

Once you see that the moss has turned black (necrosed), it is necessary to carry out a local scarifying or raking to clean away the remains of dead material.

After this cleaning, small bare patches will remain in the ground. At that point, we recommend carrying out a reseeding to cover those gaps quickly and prevent the moss from sprouting again.
