To understand the categories in detail, read our guide to choosing S1P and S3 safety shoes.
How to choose your safety footwear
- Protection category: S1P and S3 are the most common on building sites; occupational footwear (O2) has no safety toe cap.
- Toe cap type: fibreglass or composite for metal-free footwear; metal or steel toe caps on other models.
- Work environment: waterproof (WR) for rain and mud, nitrile sole for heat or oils and hydrocarbons, ESD for antistatic environments.
- Format: boot for ankle support, shoe or trainer for lightness, sandal for hot weather.
- Lace-free: some boots close with hook-and-loop, elastic or no laces at all, to put on faster.
Frequently asked questions
What do S1P and S3 mean on safety footwear?
They are protection categories. S1P includes a safety toe cap, an anti-puncture insole, an antistatic sole and energy absorption in the heel; S3 adds resistance to water penetration and a cleated sole.
What is the difference between safety and occupational footwear?
Safety footwear has a protective toe cap, while occupational footwear (O2), such as the Agro FTW01 O2 WR boot or the STEP O2 trainer, does not.
Is a fibreglass or a steel toe cap better?
It depends on the use. Fibreglass or composite toe caps allow metal-free footwear, while metal or steel toe caps are found on models such as the Classic or the Camel.
Which safety footwear is suitable for rain or mud?
Waterproof footwear such as the Outdoor FTW01 S3 WR or the Camel S7S, or an S5 PVC safety wellington.
Is there safety footwear for kitchens and catering?
Yes, the Chef range (72323, 72324, 72325 and 72326) is category S2, made of white or black water-repellent microfibre with a metal toe cap.
