How much stone or substrate do I need?

To calculate how much stone and soil you need to fill a gabion or a gabion planter, follow these steps:

  1. Calculate the total liters of the planter:
Multiply the length, width, and height of the planter in meters to get the volume in cubic meters. Then convert cubic meters to liters (1 cubic meter = 1000 liters).
  2. Determine the liters of the planter cavity:
If the planter has an empty central space (cavity) for planting, calculate its volume in liters. This is the space you will need to fill with soil and gravel.
  3. Calculation of the filling stone for the gabion:
  4. Calculate the amount of soil and gravel for the cavity:

Example:

  • Planter dimensions: 2 meters long, 0.5 meters wide, and 0.8 meters high.
  • Total volume: 2 x 0.5 x 0.8 = 0.8 cubic meters = 800 liters.
  • Cavity for plants: If the cavity has dimensions of 1.8 meters long, 0.3 meters wide, and 0.6 meters high: 1.8 x 0.3 x 0.6 = 0.324 cubic meters = 324 liters.
  • Liters for the gabion: 800 - 324 = 476 liters.
  • Adding 10% for gabion expansion: 476 x 1.10 = 523.6 liters.
  • Stone needed: 523.6 x 1.6 = 837.76 kg.

Result: For this planter, you will need approximately 838 kg of stone to fill the gabion and 324 liters of soil or a combination of gravel and soil for the cavity.

This calculation ensures that you have the exact amount of materials so that your gabion planter looks spectacular and is perfectly functional.

Clarifications

ATTENTION!

Sizes are mesh sizes

The actual sizes may vary slightly, since when talking, for example, about 60-80mm stone, it means that the stones pass through an 80x80mm square mesh and do not pass through a 60x60mm one.
A stone 100mm long and 65mm wide can pass through that 80x80 mesh, so there may be a percentage of stones larger than 80 and smaller than 60mm.

Stone breakage

On the other hand, in stones larger than 60mm, there is a percentage of up to 10% of stones that can break during sorting, washing, loading, and unloading; to this day, we do not have machinery that prevents those breakages.

In the photos you can see, only real products are shown; broken pieces have not been removed.

Dust and sand in the products

This product is not washed, so it contains dust, sand, and even traces of other products due to processing and transport. This does not pose a problem when using it; the stone will wash itself over time, or you can hose it down before using it.
