Concrete Base for Wooden Posts - Insulates from Moisture and Extends Service Life

Concrete post base: keeping the wooden post off the ground

A wooden post or column driven straight into the ground constantly absorbs moisture, rots at the base and ends up compromising the whole structure it supports. This base fixes the problem at the root: it raises the wood and keeps it away from contact with damp soil, resting on a solid 47.2 kg concrete piece unaffected by water.

✅ Key advantages

  • Cuts off rising damp: the wood rests on concrete, not on soil, which is where rot starts.
  • Stable base: 47.2 kg of solid piece giving the post a firm footing on soft ground.
  • Designed for damp areas: gardens, irrigated areas and spaces exposed to water.
  • Zero maintenance: the concrete won't rust, won't rot, and needs no treatment.
  • Clean finish: a truncated-pyramid profile that drains water outward instead of trapping it.

🏗️ Recommended applications

  • Wooden pergolas and porches.
  • Fence posts and garden enclosures.
  • Carport and canopy pillars.
  • Supports for decks and raised structures.
  • Any wooden column on damp or irrigated ground.

🧰 Installation

  1. Set out the position of each post and check that all the bases will end up at the same height.
  2. Excavate and compact the footing, or prepare a concrete pad if the ground is soft: at 47.2 kg, it needs firm support.
  3. Bed the base, level it in both directions and check it's plumb before anything sets.
  4. Leave the top of the base above the finished ground level, never flush with it or buried.
  5. Fix the wooden post to the top of the piece with the fitting suited to your structure.
  6. Finish the surrounding area so water drains away and doesn't pool around the base.

💡 Professional tip: the base only works if its top stays above the finished ground level. The most common mistake is burying it while leveling the garden, or leaving it flush with the gravel: then water pools against the wood and you're back to exactly the problem you wanted to avoid, only now with 47.2 kg on top of it. Always leave a few centimeters of clearance and give the surrounding area a slight slope. And level it while placing the piece, not afterwards: moving a base once it's bedded is a two-person job.
