Galvanised Dowels for Balustrades: what they are
These are the steel pins that pass through the base of the baluster and tie it to the wall and to the coping. Without them the balustrade is held only by the bonding mortar, and a sideways knock is enough to dislodge a piece. They're galvanised, which is what stops the pin rusting inside the concrete, swelling and eventually splitting the base of the very piece it's meant to hold.

🧰 Installation
Mark out the baluster centres on the wall before drilling any point.
Drill with a bit sized to the dowel: if the hole is loose, the pin won't do its job.
Clean out the drilling dust; mortar doesn't bond over drilling dust.
Bed the dowel in bonding mortar, leaving enough exposed to thread the baluster base onto it.
Thread the baluster on and plumb it before the mortar starts to grab.
Check that the head lines up with the coping's hole before fitting it.

💡 Professional tip: drill with exactly the right diameter bit, not one size up. An oversized hole fills with mortar and looks fine, but the pin ends up floating and the baluster rotates on its base within a few months. And allow one dowel per baluster plus a 10% reserve: a few always bend on installation, and it isn't worth stopping the job over that.
