Build a level footing and leave starter rebar centered on the axis of the pillar.
Set the first piece on fresh mortar and check that it is level, plumb and square.
Stack the remaining pieces, threading the rebar through the central cavity, with a joint of constant thickness.
Fill the central cavity with fluid concrete in lifts of three or four courses.
Remove excess mortar while it is still fresh: on a smooth face, grout stains are much more visible.
Finish the top with the flat or diamond-point concrete pillar cap, always with a drip edge.
