- Check that the substrate is clean, sound and free of dust or formwork residue; dampen it slightly if the surface is very absorbent.
- Spread pieces from several boxes on the ground and lay out the pattern before bonding anything, mixing tones and sizes.
- Spread exterior-grade tile adhesive with a notched trowel on the substrate and also apply a thin layer to the back of the piece (double buttering).
- Fit pieces from bottom to top, pressing and twisting each one slightly to bed it, and check it's level every two or three rows.
- Leave the joint you've decided on (or butt-join) and grout with joint mortar once the adhesive has cured.
- Clean off residue with a damp sponge before it hardens and, outdoors, consider a colorless water repellent.
