Unisex 100% cotton lab coat with concealed press studs
Velilla 539005 unisex 100% cotton lab coat: no synthetic fibre, with concealed press studs
The only coat in the catalogue made of 100% cotton, with no polyester at all. This matters in two specific scenarios: where there is a risk of sparks or radiant heat, because cotton chars instead of melting and sticking to the skin as polyester does, and where the wearer has skin that is sensitive to synthetic fibres. 190 g/m² twill, concealed press studs under a placket and elasticated cuffs.
✅ Features
100% cotton: no synthetic fibre. When exposed to a spark or radiant heat, cotton chars; polyester melts and sticks to the skin, making the burn worse. Note: this does not make it a certified flame-retardant garment, it only makes it less dangerous than a polyester coat.
Press studs concealed under a placket: the fasteners are covered, with no visible metal that could scratch a surface, catch on equipment or come loose on a production line.
Elasticated cuffs: the sleeve is closed at the wrist. It does not dip into a beaker, drag across the workbench or catch on a control.
Rear vent: freedom of movement when walking and bending down.
Three patch pockets.
Breathable: cotton absorbs moisture, which is welcome in hot environments.

🧺 Care
Wash at 60 °C. Cotton tolerates hotter washes than elastane blends.
Shrinks more than blends: 100% cotton may lose some size in the first wash. This is normal for this fibre.
Needs more ironing than a coat with polyester; it creases easily.
It takes longer to dry than synthetic blends.
Suitable for industrial laundering. Being white 100% cotton, it tolerates bleaching agents better than polyester.
💡 Tip: Order one size up from your usual one. 100% cotton shrinks considerably more in the first wash than a 65/35 blend, and a coat that fitted snugly will no longer close properly across the chest or will be short in the sleeves after the first cycle. If you are buying for a team, mention this before taking sizes: it is the usual cause of exchanges in the first month with pure cotton garments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose a 100% cotton lab coat?
For two reasons. First, safety against sparks or radiant heat: cotton chars, whereas polyester melts and sticks to the skin, making the burn worse. Second, comfort for wearers with skin sensitivity to synthetic fibres.
Is it a flame-retardant coat?
No. Being cotton makes it less dangerous than a polyester coat when exposed to a spark, but it is not a certified flame-retardant garment. For a real thermal risk you need a garment certified to a specific EN standard.
Does it shrink in the wash?
Yes, more than 65/35 blends. Order one size above your usual one and mention this before taking sizes for a team: it is the most common cause of exchanges in the first month.
What are concealed press studs with a placket?
Snap fasteners covered by a fabric flap, so that no metal is visible that could scratch a surface or catch on equipment.
What are the elasticated cuffs for?
To close the sleeve at the wrist: it does not dip into a beaker or drag across the workbench.
Can it withstand industrial washing at 90 degrees?
The manufacturer specifies 60 °C. Cotton tolerates high temperatures better than elastane blends, but at 90 °C shrinkage soars.
Can it be sterilised in an autoclave?
Cotton withstands steam better than polyester, but the garment is not approved as an autoclave textile. For sterilisation you must use textiles specifically validated for that process.
