Formentor Pool Coping - Anti-Slip Wood-Look

Formentor Pool Coping: the look of decking without the problems

Wood next to a pool is beautiful the first summer and a problem from the third one on: it lifts, splinters, and needs sanding and oiling every season. The Formentor coping reproduces wood grain in concrete, with USRV 61, class 3, and a surface that doesn't burn to the touch, with no seasonal maintenance at all.

✅ Key advantages

  • Wood grain in concrete: the warm look of decking with no splinters, no sanding and no annual oiling.
  • Doesn't burn to the touch: can be walked on barefoot at midday in August, unlike most dark paving.
  • Anti-slip USRV 61, class 3: the rating required for wet outdoor surfaces.
  • Long 80 cm format: fewer joints per linear metre, which reinforces the look of a continuous plank.
  • No rot or insects: since it isn't wood, it doesn't rot in contact with water or fall prey to xylophages.
  • Continuity with the paving: the range is designed to blend with wood-grain paving of the same finish.

🏗️ Recommended uses

  • Coping for pools with an outdoor decking aesthetic.
  • Coping for spas, outdoor hot tubs and garden showers.
  • Replacing wood edges damaged by splintering or rot.
  • Pool edges in hot climates, where dark paving is unwalkable barefoot.
  • Coping for water features and ponds with a warm finish.

🧰 Installation

  1. Dry-lay the perimeter and decide the grain direction before bonding: on a piece that imitates wood, cross-grain stands out badly.
  2. Mix pieces from several pallets to spread out grain variation and avoid the same pattern repeating every couple of planks.
  3. Dampen the pool shell coping and bed with a C2 tile adhesive rated for outdoor and immersion use, using double buttering.
  4. Keep a slope of 1.5-2% toward the outside along the whole edge.
  5. Leave a 3-5 mm joint between pieces and an elastic expansion joint every 4-5 m and at the corners.
  6. Grout with an outdoor-rated mortar in a tone close to the coping, to avoid drawing a grid that breaks the plank effect.

📦 Available formats

  • Unit of 80 × 30 × 3.5 cm in Norwegian white.
  • Unit of 80 × 30 × 3.5 cm in oak brown.
  • Pallet of 62 units (1,244 kg) in either tone.

💡 Professional tip: the key to making wood-grain concrete read as real wood is in the grouting and the shuffling. Use a joint mortar in a tone very close to the piece: if it contrasts, it draws a grid and the eye stops reading planks and starts reading tiles. Open two or three pallets at once to alternate pieces; the mould repeats its pattern, and if you lay in pallet order the same grain will show up every few planks. Also, even though this material doesn't burn like a dark slab, it's still pool coping and not a paving slab: it works wet and cantilevered over the pool shell, so it needs an immersion-rated tile adhesive and an expansion joint against the surround slab.

Frequently Asked Questions
