Concrete Bollards, Bike Racks and Bins: How to Choose

A bollard marks a boundary, a bike rack brings order and a bin keeps a place clean: three simple pieces that, in white concrete, share material and look. In this guide we go through the four bollards, the bike rack and the bin from Vetonek with the data in their product sheets, so you can choose according to use, weight and how it is installed.

Concrete bollards: four shapes and four weights

All are made of moulded concrete in white, sold individually and intended for outdoor use. What changes is the shape and, above all, the weight:

  • The Ajamil bollard is a hemisphere of Ø 38 × 37 cm and 54 kg. Its sheet presents it with a double use: a deterrent bollard on the ground or a spherical finial on pillars and low walls. It is installed resting in place or fixed with mounting adhesive.
  • The Laguna bollard is a sphere of Ø 65 cm and 215 kg, with no edges, that is set in place with mechanical means.
  • The Cabezón bollard is a prism of 83 × 29 × 29 cm and 70 kg; at 83 cm high it is clearly visible, and its sheet states it can be anchored in problem areas. It can be lined up in a series to mark out pavements.
  • The Gallinero bollard is a monolith of 100 × 54 × 54 cm and 420 kg, in moulded reinforced concrete, unloaded with mechanical means. Its top face is flat.

The rounded shapes (Ajamil and Laguna) have no edges; the prism and the monolith give a more architectural line. If you need to protect a specific point against vehicles, the sheets do not state any impact resistance: consult the project technician or the person responsible for the road about the right type of element, spacing and foundation.

Leza bike rack: one piece per bicycle

The Leza bike rack is a white concrete block of 35 × 35 cm and 55 kg with a slot for the wheel. The sheet states a capacity of one bicycle per piece, so you add one per space, side by side or spaced apart. It is placed without anchors or building work and can be relocated. So that the handlebars do not clash, the sheet recommends leaving 60 to 70 cm between pieces. It suits residential communities, shops and building entrances.

Zorraquín bin: three versions

The Zorraquín bin has a white concrete body of Ø 41 × 90 cm and comes in three versions: bin without hood (134 kg), bin with a hood that protects from the rain (140 kg) and outdoor ashtray (136 kg). The inner bucket is removable for easy emptying, and its look matches the bollards and benches in the range. The sheet suggests placing the ashtray by the door and the bin with a hood a few metres further on, to separate cigarette butts from waste.

Combining the pieces with the rest of the space

As they all belong to the same white range, they are easy to mix: an entrance can combine bollards with concrete planter boxes (the Gallinero sheet suggests alternating monoliths and planter boxes), a rest area can add concrete benches, and the trees along a promenade can have tree surrounds and lawn edging. For the paving they stand on, see the guide to concrete pavers and slabs.

Placing and safety

The sheets describe pieces that are placed without building work, some with a fixing option. Even so, the weight means you need to plan the unloading: the heaviest (Gallinero and Laguna) require mechanical means. If the pieces are going on a public road, at a pedestrian crossing or next to a carriageway, the location, distances and applicable regulations must be defined with the project technician or the local council.

How to choose

  1. Define the function: marking off a passage, decorating a pillar, parking bicycles or collecting waste.
  2. Choose the weight and shape: light hemisphere (Ajamil), heavy sphere (Laguna), slender prism (Cabezón) or monolith (Gallinero).
  3. Count the bicycle spaces: one piece per bike.
  4. Decide the bin version: open, with hood or ashtray.
  5. Plan the unloading and the base before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Which concrete bollard is the heaviest?

The Gallinero bollard, at 420 kg, is the heaviest; next come the Laguna bollard at 215 kg, the Cabezón at 70 kg and the Ajamil at 54 kg.

Do concrete bollards have to be anchored?

It depends on the model. The Ajamil is installed resting in place or fixed with mounting adhesive, and the Cabezón can be anchored in problem areas according to its sheet. For public roads, consult the project technician.

How many bicycles does the Leza bike rack take?

One per piece. If you need more spaces, add more pieces, leaving 60 to 70 cm between them according to the sheet.

What versions does the Zorraquín bin come in?

Three: bin without hood, bin with a rain hood and outdoor ashtray. All share the same size, Ø 41 × 90 cm, and weigh between 134 and 140 kg.

Do these pieces need maintenance?

The sheets describe them as outdoor concrete, intended for frost, sun and heavy use, and the bike rack is stated as maintenance-free. On the bin, the inner bucket is removable for emptying.

Find all the pieces in the street furniture collection, or go straight to the Laguna bollard, the Leza bike rack or the Zorraquín bin.
