Duna Olite Golden Sandstone Rubble Masonry - Natural Stone for Walls and Facades

Duna Olite Sandstone Rubble Masonry · Golden: walls with the soul of ancient stone

There are walls you build and walls you inherit. Duna Olite sandstone rubble masonry belongs to the second kind: natural stone that the earth formed over millions of years in the mountains of Burgos, sand turned to rock layer by layer, now split into irregular pieces to raise walls, clad façades or bring a stone house back to life.

Its golden tone, with a beige background, orange and brown veins and flecks of mica, is the colour of city walls and Romanesque churches in the late afternoon sun. It is also the hardest variety of the Duna family (68 MPa compressive strength).

This is the technique that built the houses, barns and chapels of our villages for centuries: stone upon stone, each one different, fitted by hand. A rubble masonry wall is never painted and never goes out of fashion; it simply gets better with the years.

✨ Why Duna rubble masonry wins hearts

  • Authenticity: solid stone 10 to 22 cm thick, not thin cladding strips or imitations. The wall is real stone, inside and out.
  • Every wall is unique: unrepeatable shapes, sizes and veining, with the charm of traditional architecture.
  • Ages with elegance: over the years it gains patina, moss in the joints and character, with no paints or treatments.
  • Beautiful and tough: after 56 freeze-thaw cycles (UNE-EN 12371) it keeps over 90% of its strength, and it is tested for thermal shock. Suitable for walls and façades in cold and mountain areas.
  • Truly natural: stone from a Spanish quarry, CE marked for construction materials.

📐 Two thicknesses, two uses

  • Thickness 10-12 cm (facing rubble): for cladding or facing existing walls and façades, plinths, fireplaces and barbecues. Coverage around 4–5 m² per tonne; each pallet holds about 6 m² (1,300–1,400 kg).
  • Thickness 18-22 cm (building rubble): for raising single-leaf stone walls, garden walls, terracing and enclosures. Coverage around 2–2.5 m² per tonne; each pallet holds about 4 m² (1,900–2,000 kg).

🏡 Where to use it

  • Boundary walls, terracing and garden walls.
  • Façade cladding and plinths with a traditional stone look.
  • Restoration of country houses, barns, cellars and stone buildings.
  • Fireplaces, barbecues, ovens and decorative panels.
  • Stone planters and flower beds.

🎨 More from the Duna range

💡 Professional tip: work out the m² of the wall and divide by the approximate m² per pallet; add 10% for trimming pieces and waste. When raising the wall, take stones from several pallets at once to spread sizes and tones, and keep the largest, flattest pieces for the corners and the base.

🪨 Natural stone: as these are irregular split pieces, size, shape and tone vary from piece to piece and from the photos. The m² per pallet are approximate and depend on the bond and the joint. That is the signature of an authentic material, not a defect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it withstand frost?

Yes. It is sandstone tested through 56 freeze-thaw cycles (UNE-EN 12371). It is suitable for walls and façades in cold and mountain areas.

Which thickness should I choose?

The 10-12 cm is for cladding or facing existing walls and façades. The 18-22 cm is for raising single-leaf stone walls, garden walls and terracing.

How many m² does a pallet cover?

Approximately 6 m² in the 10-12 cm thickness (coverage of 4-5 m² per tonne) and 4 m² in the 18-22 cm (2-2.5 m² per tonne). It depends on the bond and the joint width.

How much does a pallet weigh?

Between 1,300 and 1,400 kg for the 10-12 cm and between 1,900 and 2,000 kg for the 18-22 cm. Suitable unloading equipment is needed.

Is it sold by the m² or in small quantities?

It is supplied by full pallet. If you need a special quantity, write to us and we will look into it.

Is there a multi-tone version?

Yes, the Duna Tricolour Mix rubble masonry combines golden, pink and white pieces for a wall with richer colour.

How is it laid?

With lime mortar or bastard mortar, bedding each stone and filling the joints well. To face an existing wall, anchoring or tying the stone to the substrate is recommended. If you lack experience, entrust the work to a mason or stonemason.

Are there special pieces for corners and finishing?

Yes. We make corner stones, ashlar, lintels and copings to measure in the same stone. Write to us with dimensions and quantity and we will prepare a no-obligation quote.

Are all the stones the same?

No: they are irregular pieces of natural stone and each one has its own shape, size and veining. Mix stones from several pallets when building for an even result.

Does it need maintenance?

Practically none. If you wish, you can apply a breathable water repellent to make cleaning easier.
